Various factors are at the origin of the appearance of the brown spots: the cellular ageing, the sun exposure or even certain hormonal changes such as the pregnancy. The brown spots are also called “dark spots” because they correspond to a hyperpigmentation of the skin which results from an excess of melanin, biological pigment at the origin of the skin coloration, distributed in an irregular way. The synthesis of the melanin is made from an amino acid, the tyrosine, catalysed by an enzyme, the tyrosinase. The tyrosine is transformed into DOPA, itself oxidized into dopaquinone. After several other chemical reactions (cyclisation, dehydrogenation, decarboxylation, and finally polymerization) there is creation of melanin.
